KL Dragons to play without any ASEAN imports in ABL
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Friday, October 9, 2009 – Malaysia’s first professional basketball KL Dragons unveiled their lineup for the inaugural ASEAN Basketball League.
Americans Jamal Brown and Chris Lynch are the two international imports in a team notable for the absence of any ASEAN imports.
10 out of the 12-man roster are Malaysians while their coach is Goh Cheng Huat, 56, an ex-national player.
The KL Dragons are owned by entrepreneurs Ruben Emir Gnanalingam, Dato’ Wira Dani Daim and Dato’ Robin Tan Yeong Ching.
“We hope to create an alternative avenue for kids to participate in a healthy lifestyle and fuel their passion in striving to be the best by giving them opportunities to become professional players,” Dato’ Wira Dani Daim said, who envisions a future where youths can choose basketball as a profession.
For a start, KL Dragons will organize an Under-14 and Under-17 league as a feeder for the ABL squad.
“The ABL through the KL Dragons provides a great opportunity to promote KL, Malaysia, and Malaysian brands. … As a result, we also hope to see an increase in tourists visiting KL and the rest of Malaysia as well,” Mr. Ruben Emir Gnanalingam says.
The first home game for the KL Dragons will be at the MABA Stadium, KL, on October 14th, 2009, at 7pm.
