BritAma Arena, Jakarta, Sunday, November 8, 2009 – Satria Muda BritAma handed the Brunei Barracudas a crushing 97-62 defeat to improve their win-loss record to 3-2 in Round 5 of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).

Satria Muda now lie in second place on the standings while the 35-point loss – the largest defeat suffered by any team so far in the ABL – dropped the Barracudas to 1-4 and fifth place, one rung below the last playoff spot.

The win, their second at home, was a good tonic for the Satria Muda squad after they were hit with a 26-point, 97-72 away loss at the hands of the Singapore Slingers the previous week.

The Barracudas, who have now lost three straight games, were let down by their poor shooting, hitting 37% from the field for the game.

By the end of the first quarter, their 5 of 16 shooting left the Barracudas staring at an 11-25 deficit and their situation did not improve in the second quarter as Satria Muda put on a shooting clinic, dropping 30 points to open up a 55-30 half-time lead.

It was not much of a contest in the second half either, with Satria Muda establishing a 30-point lead at the end of the third at 79-49 before wrapping up their third win of the campaign.

New American import, 6′ 10″ (208cm) American Nakiea Miller, brought in to replace the out-of-favour Theophilus Little, stood out on his debut with 16 points and 19 rebounds.

Alexander Hartman, who had to endure heckling from Slinger fans last week in his team’s loss, had more fun this week on court with a game-high 23-point performance.

The Barracudas used nine men in the game but were still heavily reliant on their imports Lonnie Jones, Michael Pilgrim, Caledon Camaso, Leonidez Avenido and Francis Adriano to carry the team. Bruneian Esmond Sim saw 21 minutes but fellow locals Benjamin Sim (10:23), Lim Chee Choun (4:23) and Ho Hee Lee (1:48) saw much less playing time.

“It was very disappointing for us. We just couldn’t catch up with them (Satria Muda). We know that they are a good team despite their defeat to the Slingers [on Nov 1]. They just had a bad game [then] and came back strong against us,” said Benny Ang, the Barracudas manager, as quoted in the Brunei Times.

“I don’t really know what happened from the start [on Saturday], but we don’t blame anyone for the loss. We just couldn’t match the intensity of our opponents. We weren’t as ready as them despite coming into the game with good preparations and practice,” added Ang.

Satria Muda will now entertain the Slingers at home in Jakarta on November 14th while the Barracudas will entertain the winless Thailand Tigers in Bandar Sri Begawan on the same day.
