Philippines only SEA country to make main quarter-final stage at FIBA U-16 Championship
The Philippines was the only country in South-East Asia (SEA) to make it into the main quarter-final stage of the FIBA U-16 Championship for boys.
The Philippines finished top of Group B, beating Japan (63-59), Kazakhstan (76-50) and Bahrain (62-45).
Singapore (1-2), Malaysia (1-2) and Thailand (0-3) finished their group stage out of the top two and were placed in the secondary quarter-final groups (Group III and IV). Only the top two teams from each group qualified for the main quarter-final stage (Group I and II).
In the main quarter-finals, the Philippines continued their unbeaten streak with a 71-57 win over Syria in a Group II game. The Philippines will play Iran this evening in Johor.
In the other main quarter-final stage games, China routed Taipei 108-61 while Korea beat Japan 93-56.
China, Korea and Philippines remain the only unbeaten teams at the championship.
The top two teams in Group I and II qualify for the semi-finals. At stake is a place in the FIBA U-17 Basketball Championship in Germany scheduled for July 2010.

We Filipinos are proud of our boys.. Escaping defeat with Ravena heroics vs Japan, clobbering and frustrating the taller Kazakhs, and 4th qtr poise versus Bahrain and Syria.. Later, vs Iran @2200.. They’ve beaten Iran about a week ago TWICE here in the Phils..
3 more wins and we are through to the U17 World Champs! Avoid the Chinese U19 Team! Ooops.. I mean U16..;p beat Iran and Jordan to top our group! This way, we would probably face South Korea in the semis.. That game will be tough.. It should be PHI vs CHI in the finals because only the top 2 teams will qualify.. It’s a long shot, but BEAT CHINA!!!!!!;p
So Filipinos, PRAY FOR OUR BOY’S SUCCESS!! Fellow ASEANS, PUT YOUR FAITH INTO OUR REGION’S REAMAINING REPRESENTATIVES!
All the best, Philippines! Hope you make it all the way!
They just lost to Iran 76-70.
Philipines lead 19-11 then trailed by 13 near the end of first half then was able to tie it at 60-all.
Keifer Ravena (26 points, 15 in 3rd Qrtr) is the lone go-to guy. He can’t do it all.
Iran! Iran! Iran! Iran! Iran! Philippines team…goodbye!
I think the Philippines is the smallest team among the final 8. No active player standing above 6’2, the usual height of the other 7 teams’ guards.
Philippines vs Jordan today.
Whoever wins the game will get the second semifinal spot from their group…and unfortunately will face China in the cross-over semis (well, for the Phils: a big beating from China is much easier to swallow than another 1-point heartbreaking semifinal loss to SoKor).
well atleast the philippines went to the next stage…but i quitesuprised that the lebanese arent making much noise…last edition they were powerfull
philippines just won againts jordan and will be facing china in the semis.. tough task but our boys aint intimidated they already beaten them once… fellow asean neighbors please support philippines as they represent our specially now theres a filipino in every abl team that you support.. goodluck guys!!
@amir,
On Lebanon: This is the very first U-16 staging for FIBA-Asia. You must be referring to FIBA-Asia Men or another age group(?)
Philippines just won 60-45 against Jordan. Worst possible finish now is 4th – this is already a great achievement, considering the team is made up of home grown players. No Fil-Ams or Fil-Canadians in the team. Also, the team is made up mostly of players from Luzon. No players from talent-rich Visayas.
Hoping for a monumental upset tomorrow. Or at least be the only team to give China a scare (like the 1998 team, the only one to stick close to China in the entire Asian Games tournament).
@amir- the reason why lebanon did not participate in this tourney is because they were fourth in WABA qualifier. In other words, only,iran(1st),jordan(2nd) and syria(3rd) made to qualify. It was a sorry loss by lebanon to syria, the lead was only one shot.better luck nxt time for them.
result of Lebanese relying of naturalized player always..They dont have good grassroot program as they only focus on present not in future…That why they did not qualify..Philippines now have a good program thanks to SBP..Now RP can go back to the top 4 in Asia or possibly to be come Champion once again in asia..
This RP U-16 national team doesnt have the best playes in the Phils and yet they achieve as one of the best teams in Asia. This is the result of SBP’s program,Thanks to them…Imagine if Ray Parks is with this team and other good RP players, this will a tough team to beat..Sad to say their parents did not allow thier son to join…This RP U-16 players only have 6’3″-center..
I have a feeling that RP and Iran will meet again for the battle for bronze and RP will beat them again this time to make it 3-1 againts Iran..c”,)
Iran did a good job of puting Ravena in to foul trouble..Thats why RP loss…
My prediction is correct..RP-IRAN battle for the bronze..c”,)
