Desmond Oh (Slingers, #2) scored nine points in the match after featuring for 15 minutes and 36 seconds. “Although I am happy I got quite a lot of minutes, I believe I could work on my offense more. It is hard to chase the match when you are 10 plus points down. It is possible, but very hard.” (Photo 1 © Lai Jun Wei/Red Sports)
Singapore Indoor Stadium, Monday, December 7, 2009 – The Thailand Tigers survived a late rally by the Singapore Slingers to edge the home side 65-62 and subject them to their second defeat in as many games in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).
The Slingers started the season with four straight wins, but after falling to the Philippine Patriots last month, things went downhill from there. Although they managed a slim 61-59 victory over Satria Muda BritAma in their next away game, the Slingers were then defeated 84-74 by the KL Dragons in their next match at home. With this latest setback, the Singapore Slingers now have a 5-3 win-loss record.
The Tigers, meanwhile, improve to 3-6, with this road win against the Slingers their first of the season after six attempts.
The Slingers had a positive start, taking advantage of Tigers’ turnovers to jump to a quick 15-7 lead with four and a half minutes played. The starting Slinger five of co-captain Michael Wong, alongside the four imports, Kyle Jeffers, Marcus Ng, Michael LeBlanc and Al Vergara, doing the damage for the Slingers in the opening minutes.
However, poor ball-handling on the part of the Slingers allowed the Tigers to keep within striking distance and the visitors ended the quarter only six points adrift at 16-22.
The second period belonged squarely to the Tigers as they limited the Slingers to just a measly seven points. Ratdech Kruatiwa reduced the hosts’ lead to just two points with a three-pointer at the 6:19 mark, while a quick steal by Attaporn Lertmalaiporn allowed him to level the scores at 27 with a layup.
Attaporn then sank a three-pointer to give the Tigers the lead for good with more than four minutes left in the quarter, and the Tigers extended their lead further at half-time to nine points (38-29).
The Tigers continued their dominance and mastery of the Slingers upon resumption. Kruatiwa started the quarter brilliantly for the Tigers with a three-pointer as the Slingers struggled to make their chances count in the early goings. As a result, the Tigers led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter.
Although they managed to reduce the deficit with LeBlanc’s powerful plays in the paint, the Slingers still trailed by nine points at 39-48 heading into the final quarter.
The Slingers were a different side in the final quarter. Although their opponents started with a 5-0 run, two consecutive three-pointers by Marcus Ng and Desmond Oh, along with a three-point play by Marcus, put the crowd firmly behind the Slingers and reduce the deficit to six points with 4:50 left on the clock. It was down to just four points at 61-65 when Kyle Jeffers made a layup three minutes later.
A series of missed free throws by Ikenna Chukwuemeka Nwankwo gave the Slingers and the home fans a glimpse of hope, but cheap turnovers and fouls cost them in the dying moments as Marcus failed to make a three-pointer at the buzzer.
“We showed what we could do in the last few minutes of the game when we chased the game,” said Slingers’ ASEAN import Marcus Ng, “but that was what we should have done throughout the match. We had trouble running through them as they shot down all our fast break and we couldn’t make crucial plays.”
Slingers’ court captain and point guard Al Vergara attributed the loss to his team’s defense and rebounding. Al said: “It was bad. In the first quarter we led by 8 points, the second quarter we only scored 5 points? In the fourth quarter, we didn’t have time. They (Tigers) had a lot of offensive rebounds.”
The Slingers will have to bounce back on the road against third-placed Satria Muda BritAma on Saturday, while the Tigers will take on the KL Dragons on Sunday.

Attaporn Lertmalaiporn (Tigers, #55) was the star of the Tigers with 13 points including five straight points in the second quarter to level the match and give the Tigers the lead. Well one thing I totally agree with reading all this nonsense is that Jeffers is the best American in the League!! lol… Slingermom
Slingerock, you are confuse, C. Billups when he used to help th Pistons NBA champ together with Wallace prince, LASTLY Rip Hamilton,Hes the only guy i remember in pistons champ, when hamilton and Jordan use to play his last team with Washington Wizards… Detroit Pistons?? Isaih thomas,Bill laimbeer,Sally, Rodman,Rick Mahorn, considered as the Notorios BADBOYS of NBA,those players i only remember when Pistons are mentioed, is that make sense?
-Kobe Lebron, to add Yao ming, Dirk Nowitzky? i rather watch Tyrone Bogues,Spud webb dunking.
SEAB representatives to FIBA ASIA Phils & Indonesia. Other prospects,Thailand and Malaysia. SEA games singapore place is what?
In FIBA rules, Chinese national Built a true Basketball Player
Im not a fan of SLingers, baraccudas, nor KL dragons, im a basketball fans
More easier to understand. SLingers are good? good for nothing, or Nothing??
Deanna, i dont want to argue with you. I mentioned Satria Muda import Hartman is the best import in this League. I should used to with Reggie Larry, but i think hi still have wrist injury he got when he played with Thailand, same reason when he supposed to play to PBA
Eindhow, i dont know Jian, but if you describing him to Rodney Santos? my opinion is no.
HEY, THAT WAS NOT ME! HAHAHAHA! Backread..;p
Why comment on HIS (not my..;p) opinion?? Nobody commented when you compared Espiritu to Dominique..
Eindhow, Espiritu can elevate, obviously during NCAA-UAAP slumdunk, he can slash, can rebound, 6″3 but he can play as 6’5
Jerwin Gaco once play for archer, undrafted in PBA. I remember him during archer-eagles UAAP big big riots, but i never remember him as a bad boy
haha both Wei Jian and Rodney Santos has the killer chin lol
tartakobsy, was then detroit pistons Grant Hill promoting some sports items in Manila, when hill visited PBA to watch short games,by chance he saw rodney santos moves then playing doing reverse lay ups
Holy crap… Ikenna was one for ten from the line? That’s worse than Shaq or Ben Wallace!
What’s his season FT% been like? If it’s anything like in this game, then playing “Hack-a-Shaq” with him is viable strategy.
Other ABL team should get legitimate C/F position to make more competitive like Jeffers. I seen import ok KL dragons i is guard and 1 is defender,im not sure if they measure above 6″7 feet,in ABL they play tall in their position. Satria Muda Hartman is big guard, shooting forward, forward, too many positions,Satria muda need to improve further their outside shooting, otherwise they will be beaten by Slingers
@Eindhow, thanks for the comments about the Patriots I asked for. Appreciated:)
As for Hanoi09, no offense, but you should pick up some basic english, before jumping to conclusions about what people did say and did not say.
I’m confused about Billups? Come on, man. Do you know the meaning of ‘confused’ in the 1st place? Asking whether YOU know Kobe and LeBron doesn’t make me confused in anyway. By the way, Mr Billups is playing in Denver for quite a while already, just to update you. It’s been ages since he was in the Pistons.
@Deana, Yea, Kyle Jeffers is the BEST import in the ABL, though he didn’t play his best game against the Tigers. Defense…Offense…he is the entire package.
Hano09-SG – I agree you did not say that… backread lol…..
TY Slingerrocks… I missed that game totally, thought Slingers had game this weekend next… now don’t know if there will be a play by play on Slingers this weekend? u know?
Les, Jan, can I get heads up on any links to Slinger game please? TY
Hi @Deana,
Slingers are on the road this weekend to Jakarta, a story is coming up shortly : ) We’ll be in Jakarta, follow my tweets : )
ots of confusion out here,
Billups when i say i dont know him, is because im not a fans of Pistons and i let it go, it is Rip Hamilton thats make me impress as a fans, means i just ignore billups, and not that i dont know him, if hes playing with other teams, doesnt care
as i had mentioned multiple times that only Ng is the true basketball player in Slinger, here aside from Imports, i dont impress with others players in Slingers basketball teams, very simple analogy to, ignore slingers and, billups. Im speaking being a ABL Basketball fans im not supporter of any specific commercial teams here, while there are some players that makes me entertain, especially when wathing in SIS.
FINALLY, TO ALL – To make my self clear, Is Slingers GOOD, GOOD FOR NOTHING, OR NOTHING? -
Hope you catch my real intention………Peace to All, more years to ABL, hope to see Vietnamese Team next season….. Hanoi-Singapore
i will watch SLing-Satria this saturday over ESPN.
If satria converts points from the outside and if slingers 2 imports deliver, good match, more entertainment to watch.
@deana, to follow the game’s score, you could follow the live stats by the FIBAlivestats, which provides the box score, shot chart and game leaders of both teams. This link will come alive once the game begins: http://www.fibalivestats.com/matches/4466/01/10/08/77YM920VCk6n2/
Redhoop tweets will be more detailed though.
I did say however that I hope that Kyle Jeffers can take on a little bit more of the scoring load to lead the Slingers back into their usual winnning ways. I’ve seen much more from Kyle Jeffers in the 4 games, so I’ve never once denied that KJ is still the best import in this league. He is way better than how he played against Thailand on monday. The young team is desperately in need of his leadership. After all, he is the captain of this team.
How to defeat the SLingers by other teams:-
1.convert outside peremiter
2.Convert second chance shots,if they can out rebound Jeffers
3.If both imports failed to score each 15 points.
4.Jeffers can only defend inside, slow, but he will remain threat inside, and cannot provide more scores.
Patriots only lost was to SLingers because patriots outside shot turn to sour, offensive foul of patriots jersey patriots jersey no 16 was the crucial call, the 5 second inbound violation, if that converts,it could be other way around, dont have trigerman from the 3 points, this same goes to Satria Muda and baracudas. Only team have 3 points artist are 3 from KL Dragons,3 from Tigers, Both Tigers & Baracudas beat slingers. Both patriots & baracudas lost to slingers.
*** adjustment for Patriots, give more playing time to Filipino Jersey No. 14 and limit the playing time to jersey no.5. Patriots wearing Jersey No. 14 Mirza,is the best player they have
For satria, convert more outside shooting, hartman cannot make only himself. BUt hartman is a complete player, at his height he can play position 1,2,3,4,5
i dnt know if the signing of filipino arnold gamboa a 6’6 center/forward has consummated. he will be a good back up for nakeia miller. Hes bruiser and banger.a former PBA plyer who can give jeffers a good body massage. He has no scoring arsenal, but reliable in defence.Although his age and injury will be a big question..Also with filipino ron capati a 6’3 forward, also a bruiser and can hit mid range and beyond the arc.I hope they are all signed by satria muda,in time of tomorrows game against slinger.
jack, it thi sarnold gamboa play for San Miguel in PBA, i think hes bit old now? if im not mistaken Gamboa is 2 brothers both former PBA player
@hanoi I thought you said there is no such thing as “How to defeat the Slingers??”..:D
I can’t catch your real intention because I don’t understand what you meant.. Sorry..
If you guys are so good in basketball, why don’t you work your arse up and play for your nation? What’s the point of being a smart-aleck here?
I believe each and every team worked really hard and it’s not all about winning all the time. What’s the point of winning with no dignity? Just for that short glory moment?
Eindhow, ” There is no such thing to defeat Slinger” because theres no any special thing in Slingers, any team can beat them.
For me they are nothing..sorry to hurt Slinger fans, PEACE.
Slingerrocks… thanks for the link… & about Jeffers… remember there are 5 players on that court & they all need to step up! Gooo Slingers!!!
@mark- Yes, its the older brother who played in san miguel, the younger brod is one of the assistants of the phil patriots. Hes old already, but a potent reliever.Besides hes now a low paid player.
where is the story on this Slinger game?? hmnnn no Slinger story.. no tweets..
@hanoi09, your “how to defeat the Slingers” would work out because no one can understand what you are saying.
Satria’s locals played great against the Slingers. Maybe it’s no longer a good idea to hire additional Asean Import.
Satria’s involvement on their IBL is paying dividends now as the local players get a lot more exposure there thus building confidence.
i totally agree with slingerrocks for the 1st time, hanoi09 more practice in your English. can’t understand what you are saying… make use of google translator instead.
Slingerock, Jake, no problem,if you dont understand what i mean.
I just mentioned what i predicted in previous statements that KL dragons will beat Slingers, Tigers will also beat Slingers, Barracudas will beat Dragons, and today Satria will beat Slingers.
This coming thursday, i just have a feeling, Slingers will bounce back to Tigers, and they will bounce back strong, to the point that Tigers will fall to its final end, means in 6 place. This time tigers jersey no.12 and 55 may not able deliver To kill Slingers is to kill them from outside.
Jack, Gamboa might not be an asset to Satria.
What about low post player Eddie Laure, swingman Omanzi Rodriguez , Ruben Dela rosa,or high flying Michael Garcia (known for wearing different pair of Shoes) of defunct MBA. Lots of talents out there that disappeared one by one
To the moderator , please consider this post in Tagalog, the message is relatively local and I am not transgressing anybody. I just want to help so that we will understand each other better in this message board. thanks..hanoi09, pare di naman sa dinadown kita, kaya lang nakakahiya sa mga taga ibang bansa ang ingles mo. vgereb, hindi ako fil, nag aral lang ako doon ng 5 years. pasensiya kung hindi mo nakuha ang ingles, sa akin ang taga ibang bansa bukod sa hindi makaintindi ng ingles hindi rin makaintindi ng basketball, minsan nanalo ang slingers sa PBA exhibition akala boung pinas kayang talunin, ang team na slingers ay walang binatbat.
salamat.
sorry lost for the Patriots, Baclao did not play yesterday due to school commitments.
