Bandar Sri Begawan, Sunday, November 13, 2009 – The Brunei Barracudas handed the visiting Philippine Patriots a 95-70 thrashing in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL). This win gave the Barracudas their first back-to-back wins after their victory over KL Dragons the week before.
The Patriots, who were on a six-game winning streak before suffering this reverse in Brunei, drop to 7-2 but still remain atop the league. Their only other loss in the ABL came against the Singapore Slingers earlier in the season.
Barracudas suffered a scare when Michael Pilgrim went off with a shoulder injury in the first quarter and he only returned with a heavily strapped shoulder late in the second quarter.
By then, the Patriots had taken advantage of his absence to build a four-point 47-43 lead at half-time.
The Barracudas exploded from the start of the third quarter, putting together a 14-0 run to pull ahead by 10 points (57-47) at 6:41 in the third quarter.
Leading 67-59 in at the start of the fourth, a 22-6 Barracuda run the Barracudas outscored the Patriots 18-11 in the final quarter to ensure a famous victory.
The Barracudas had Reggie Larry (20 points), Michael Pilgrim (20), Celedon Camaso (18) and Leonidez Avenido (18) in high double figures.
The Patriots, missing Nonoy Baclao who had to play in a Filipino collegiate final, and Elmer Espiritu who has a broken cheek bone, only had Jason Dixon (14) and Dino Daa (10) in double figures.
“We executed tremendously and they executed badly,” Barracudas head coach Bong Ramos told the Brunei Times.
“I am sure they will adjust their strategy on Monday, so I will have to study and anticipate what adjustments they will make. I just hope we can continue winning.”
“We played lousy,” Patriots coach Louie Alas was quoted as saying in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “It’s a wakeup call [and a reminder] that any team can beat us.”
The Barracudas improve to a 4-5 win-loss record and fourth place on the league. Only the top four teams qualify for the playoffs.
The Barracudas are tied with the KL Dragons with 13 points and have identical win-loss records but they occupy fourth on the table by virtue of a better head-to-head record. The Barracudas have beaten the Dragons twice in the three meetings between the teams this season.

Mart,2007 jones cup USA team is consist of ncaa div 1 player, they are not thrash out by other team, while if giving another 2 minutes RP could have lost that game
ok. I stand corrected on the AIA’s record (5-2) which was behind jordan’s 6-1 record.
dont be too clever
Eindhow and Hanoi?? The Same?? Haha..;p
@hanoi,
6’9 is far from being 7 footer. 3 inches is a big difference.
No, Jimmy cannot finish fastbreak with exclamation point anytime he wants, there have been many times he was not able to finish.
if Jimmy failed to score on 1 out of 100 attempts, your statement is already a failure.
I would have agreed with you if you say that Jimmy can score on ALMOST every fastbreak play.
i knew aquino is 6’9, i often saw him, when he playing for Falcons. Insted of Saying 6ft, i just wrote 7ft which more closer to 6″9.
hanoi,
Puleez, pare, itigil mo na ang kaiingles mo mo. Di ka maintindihan at TH ka masyadong pakinggan. Please spare your kababayans sa kahihiyan. Magaral ka muna, por diyos por santo. Talo mo pa ni Jimmy Santos sa carabao english mo. Please itagalog mo na lang yan. Salamat.
Hanoi/Adobo,
since when did “Adobo” post that Aquino is 7 ft?
Be careful when you are using several names.
= P
Hanoi is correct, instead of writing 6FT, he mentioned 7ft,more closer to 6″9, while EJ if around 7″1, ginebra twin tower
yeah, whatever…
quit talking about nonsense. haha… it is about time that Filipinos wake up. They should have sent Smart Gilas instead of Patriots in the ABL. In that way, young players will get the chance to play internationally and they can gain valuable expriences. However, they will be scouted but at least they gained exprience. That is the best teacher.
dickens, sending gilas to ABL is nonsense, not same level.
I seen current line ups on Gilas, in due time only Japet and 1 naturalized will left there.
sending gilas defeates the purpose of the team…remember gilas is supposed to be playing for national colors and playing in this league may not help th eteam at all due to the reliance on two imports and the ABL hasnt really proven anything yet besides that it was featured in the FIBA tv

Hanoi = Adobo = tracktebel ?????
This is the beauty of this league compared to the SEABA tournament for national teams because it somehow got some sort of balance due to the presence of imports or foreign players.
I expect the Patriots to lose some games because of that so called “balance” so to me this is just fine. Besides it makes that league more exciting because it means that anyone has a chance because as an old Filipino saying goes “the ball is round.”
I also noticed that a lot of the fans here still has that national team like mentality, but keep in mind that this is a club league. If this is a national team match-up, then Brunei won’t have the likes of Don Camaso and Kiko Adriano. It is like saying that the Toronto Raptors of the NBA is the team for Canada.
In addition, I don’t think Smart-Gilas (Philippine NT) would benefit from joining the ABL even though they play with FIBA rules, but the level of competition in PBA is (I think) in fact still much higher than the ABL as of this time. No disrespect to ABL, but PBA still has the best local players from Southeast Asia. However, the ABL can catch up quickly because the PBA’s direction seemed to be back-tracked from its old practice because of the current commissioner.
In due time, Japet and the naturalized will only remains in RP Gilas.
