Bandar Sri Begawan, Sunday, November 13, 2009 – The Brunei Barracudas handed the visiting Philippine Patriots a 95-70 thrashing in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL). This win gave the Barracudas their first back-to-back wins after their victory over KL Dragons the week before.
The Patriots, who were on a six-game winning streak before suffering this reverse in Brunei, drop to 7-2 but still remain atop the league. Their only other loss in the ABL came against the Singapore Slingers earlier in the season.
Barracudas suffered a scare when Michael Pilgrim went off with a shoulder injury in the first quarter and he only returned with a heavily strapped shoulder late in the second quarter.
By then, the Patriots had taken advantage of his absence to build a four-point 47-43 lead at half-time.
The Barracudas exploded from the start of the third quarter, putting together a 14-0 run to pull ahead by 10 points (57-47) at 6:41 in the third quarter.
Leading 67-59 in at the start of the fourth, a 22-6 Barracuda run the Barracudas outscored the Patriots 18-11 in the final quarter to ensure a famous victory.
The Barracudas had Reggie Larry (20 points), Michael Pilgrim (20), Celedon Camaso (18) and Leonidez Avenido (18) in high double figures.
The Patriots, missing Nonoy Baclao who had to play in a Filipino collegiate final, and Elmer Espiritu who has a broken cheek bone, only had Jason Dixon (14) and Dino Daa (10) in double figures.
“We executed tremendously and they executed badly,” Barracudas head coach Bong Ramos told the Brunei Times.
“I am sure they will adjust their strategy on Monday, so I will have to study and anticipate what adjustments they will make. I just hope we can continue winning.”
“We played lousy,” Patriots coach Louie Alas was quoted as saying in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “It’s a wakeup call [and a reminder] that any team can beat us.”
The Barracudas improve to a 4-5 win-loss record and fourth place on the league. Only the top four teams qualify for the playoffs.
The Barracudas are tied with the KL Dragons with 13 points and have identical win-loss records but they occupy fourth on the table by virtue of a better head-to-head record. The Barracudas have beaten the Dragons twice in the three meetings between the teams this season.

i knew it would end like this, we’ve seen this in the pba where san miguel beer losing to ginebra whom the later needs a win to get into the semifinals, UAAP & NCAA teams having their own ways of defeating and pulling a team on the brink of elimination. pinoy fans what do u think?
great game by the Barracudas imports. they all scored in double figures.
the Patriots are much weaker defensively without Baclao and Espiritu. you won’t appreciate their efforts by looking at the stat sheets (ABL stat tracking has been really poor, i counted 6 blocks between them against the Slingers and read 0 on the box scores).
they don’t double-team opposing imports when Baclao is in the game because he can guard them in the post while Espiritu is the Patriots’ energizer bunny. i don’t blame Baclao for choosing to play with ADMU. it’s his last game wearing the famous blue and white jersey.
btw, what’s up with Brandon “Bangus” Powell? his minutes and shooting % are down.
Baracudas are the Darkhorse here..
They had use only 6 man rotation, not much from the bench, but they are winning
It is very nice of ABL to not restrict the players from playing in another tournament while the season is in progress. Like the Satria team (minus the imports) playing in the IBL and Baclao, Espiritu, Mhirza playing in the PCCL.
Barracudas (having 5 -6 players logging in a lot of minutes) are lucky. The ABL schedule allows their starters to gain plenty of rest in between games.
I hope it will be KL and Brunei in the finals.
Too tight for KL, i seen they will battle for 3rd place against Slingers.
Patriots american imports not much aggressive. Patriots vs Barracudas in the finals..
The Patriots really missed the presence of Baclao and Espiritu..
I love Brunei coz still filipino rules!!! (Coach and supporting cast)
No need for presence of bacloo, espiritu, it should be the 2 american imports should step up, but they are not as impressive
@hanoi I guess you don’t know what Nonoy and Elmer can bring to the Patriots.. Brunei won’t score 95 if these two were in the game.. The opponent would think twice driving through the lane.. Sure, Dixon can block shots.. But not like these two..
The younger Patriots had a hard time with the Filipino veteran players of Brunei.. Good thing Christian is back.. Hope Nonoy and Elmer could play in their next game..
Eindhow, I had already DOUBT when i first watched the games bewteen Patriots VS Slingers. I know how Nonoy and Elmer could bring to this team, however, my critic is, if the 2 Americans not able to complement what patriots lack, then they are in doomed..
This is basketball games, anything could happen, if baclao and nonoy commit sudden injury? who will lead patriots?
Nixon is 36, powell is defender not scorer.
What happen to Mirza? Did not play against Baracudas?
What’s the difference of them being injured if in the Cudas side, Avenido, Camaso or Adriano commits injuries?? For sure you would expect someone to step up in their places.. The Brunei locals will not contribute that much.. The other Patriots contributed, but it wasn’t enough because they were missing the defense of Nonoy and Elmer.. And Powell struggling..
Defense is the key attribute of the Patriots as Louie Alas is known for it.. Like I said, if the 2 were there, Brunei won’t score 95 pts..
The Patriots don’t actually rely on their imports when it comes to scoring.. But if they struggle, someone from the locals usually take over..
The only excuse for the loss is the injuries of Nonoy and Elmer.. The others just can’t do it without them.. And they lost to a better team that day..
Barracudas are the darkhorse here, i had known the individual capability of 3 filipino. NO Local support from barracudas team, they are playing 6man team rotation, NO OTHER are basketball player in barracudas.
In this League if patriots coaches specialty is Defense, thus patriots send a wrong coaches same goes to Powell.
ABL dont need a DEFENDER, BUT a SCORER. Who the heck are going to defended here? Theres no player in ABL that have the Ability to Score?
Jeffers big guy but slow? Thai jersey no 55? Anybody can easily defended by anyone
PAtriots MUST RELY on defense on 6’9 Nixon and pesci defense player Powell. Obviously these 2 are not a scorer, even not a defender?
And I thought you liked the Pistons..;p
Offense wins games.. But defense wins championships..
I like Scottie Pipen as individual. Second is Kevin Mchale, with deadly turn around shots..I NEVER say here that i like the pistons, i dont know Chauncy Billups, but i known Isaih Thomas. Now, its Rip Hamilton became the Pistons all-time leading scorer?
Which team need to Defended here? Patriots will RULE this league, BUT if they can get 1 PTS shooters, they can EASILY walk with the Title!
Can’t help but laugh.. Hihi.. Ano ba yan pre..;p
Defense = Turnovers.. Turnovers sometimes = TO Points.. TO points = EASY BASKETS..
With the caliber of players the Patriots have, as long as their defense clicks, the scoring will come with it..
Patriots dont need to defend any team here, who Slingers?
PAtriots just to score and score, dont focus to a defense to any individual player because none capable to score?
K.Mirza MUST need to give more playing time than Wainright and Powell. Mirza is a Scorer
The defense here only applicable to western imp0rts, what are then Nixon and Powell are doing?
the only local players who are capable of catching fire are the Porn guy (Tigers) and maybe Julius (SMB). players like Hong (SG), Guganeswaran (KL)… we have a vernacular term for players of their caliber: chambalero.
the ABL is all about having the better foreign imports. it’s just that the Patriots have that luxury of two local players who can stop foreign imports. both didn’t play in this loss. personally, i think the Dixon-Powell import tandem is the least consistent… good thing they have locals like Wainright and Gaco who bail them out of a bad game. with the rest… stop their imports, win the game.
K.Mirza, need to give more playing time. PAtriots point guard need to deliver outside shooting especially in 3pts range, they can easily walkaway with the title
Thailand also has R. Kruatiwa. I think he, along with Camsao, has the most 3-point field goals converted so far with a percentage close to 40 percent.
kruatiwa just got only hot during Slingers game last week, can easily apply pesci defense. Ricafuante and Briggz will explode in tonights game.
Camaso not 3pt. shooter, only in ABL he develop his shooting range.
hanoi09 ayusin mo naman ang english mo para kang trying hard di naman maintindihan…
Tigers might crash slingers tonite again?
Hanoi09,
Camaso has been a steady three point shooter even when he was in the PBA.
He is quick and can dunk at will when he was younger.
Ricafuente has not scored prominently in the last several games for the tigers (I thknk he got injured early on). Only Axel Doruelo has been the ASEAN import who contributes regularly.
Don’t argue with him.. No one will win in an argument with him..;p
yes mart, camaso won slum dunk championship, i cant remember if camaso is part of RP training pool B for 2002 Asian Games, under Ron Jacobs, unfortunately replace for medical reasons, Uichico take over as head coach.
2002 is most heartbreaking for RP Team, danny seigle was injured, they should put Davon Harp, instead of Menk, Andy Seigle instead of Penisi, Jimmy alapag not olcen racela, John Arrigo not rudy hatfield.
defense is the best offense remember that hanoi
Defense is the trade mark of coach Ron Jacobs, he develop Freddie abuda from bench warmer to became good defensive player.
In this ABL, nothing to worry to,any asean player can easily guarded by anyone. Even if your having height advantage if you cannot shoot the ball or score also useless, coach Jerry Sloan having good, small line up jazz was then John Stockton and Jeff Hornacek battle the taller Jordan and Pippen tandem.
@hanoi09-SG,
Andy Seigle was part of the 2002 Team.
Rudy Hatfield was an integral part of their campaign. He is their top rebounder. Arigo cannot replace Hatfield for that role.
Olsen Racela played well except for the missed free throws against Korea.
It’s not a given that they would have beaten Korea with Alapag and Harp.
Yes Andy was there, though not having much playing time..Olsen racela is liability both offense and defense, even when they play exhibition games in Europe. Rudy hatfield not make any damage on/off the court same with Noy Castillo when they expected most, extending to Johny abarientos 1998 with chinese team having 6″4 guard
It could be different result if Danny was not injured, and if Alapag and Harp was there.
Jimmy leaves a remarkable damage when RP beat USA team in 2007 Jones cup
Olsen Racela played well against South Korea. He is never a liability on defense. The team’s goal is to win the Asian Games. Exhibition games don’t have meaning for them except tuneup purposes. So what happened in Europe did not lead to Olsen’s expulsion from the team.
If Olsen was a liability, Coach Jong would never have Racela quarterbacking the team in the most important games.
Yes it could be different if we have Danny and Jimmy. But then again, the results could still be the same or even worse….
If Jimmy played, he’s eating into Olsen’s minutes. Danny and Davon would have eaten into somebody’s minutes. You add some, you lose some. And the team would have played differently with these players.
I remember a Pinoy broadcaster was bragging (or making some excuses) “actually our top players xxxx and yyyy are injured..so they cannot play in this tournament (Jones Cup), they could have played better.. then the Caucasian Broadcaster told him something like “you can’t use that as an excuse…other teams probably have other players not with them… this guy not playng, that guy is injured..I don’t buy into that”… very embarassing episode…
Olcen already belong to top 12 when they play exhibition to Europe.
Hes good playing in SMB as well PBA style of games, however it same story like Johny abarientos, outstanding player from Alaska, but not an impact for 98 centenial team, 1 thing for sure they are bother of taller player guarding them. Chinese, koreans are runing down the court, how can racela able to defended them, as result easy basket for chinese. Even Danny Ildefonso, very strong post player, but you cannot apply more of this with taller chinese guarding you.
Injury, not playing well was never an excuse definetely, as it happens exactly same to other teams or players
Hanoi,
Olsen being same story as Johnny (not being effective)?… Olsen not an impact for 2002 team? For me, he did. Anybody who leads his team to the final four qualifies as an impact player for me. And he showed up in that game against Korea. Perhaps you have a higher standard for an impact player than I do so I am probably the loser in this argument.
“so how can Racela able to defended them”:
Ok, so you prefer Alapag over Olsen. I don’t think Alapag would have done a better job stopping the Chinese & Korean players from scoring easy baskets.
If given a chance, I also would like Jimmy to have played in the 2002 Asian Games. But fate would have it that Olsen is the quarterback of the team. But let’s face it, Olsen has done a wondrous job that time.
Going back to the Patriots:
How are they doing when it comes to fast breaks?
Since they have a great defense (relative to the rest of the league) were they actually able to convert the takeaways and defensive rebounds into easy baskets?
Maybe they should get some inputs from Virgil Villavicencio (I think he was a follower of Pat Riley’s La Lakers fastbreak game), I remember La Salle having a vaunted fastbreak machine during their bridesmaid years.
Nicely excecuted fastbreak plays is one way of providing excitement to the fans.
Yes, Jimmy Alapag cannot defend the taller player, but he can deliver 3 pts shots, run and elevate and can do even in your face dunk against taller line up. The type of racela setting up play is ineffect for Taller chinese. RP team should need quick ball movementand find an open man to shoot so where the trademark of chinese. No, its John Arrigo i prefer than Olcen Racela.
Poor Patriots.
they suddenly transform to an running team when Baguion enters the game and the Patriots go with two PG’s. they’re normally a half-court team giving the ball to Dixon inside most of the time.
Jimmy alapag contributes RP team beating USA in Jones Cup as well beating China in 2007 Fiba.
Yes. I’m already aware that Alapag is good. IMHO, he should have been included in this year’s PBA selection for FIBA Asia.
The China team they beat in 2007 FIBA is China “B” team. That team did not even reach the quarterfinals(?).
And the USA team they beat in 2007 Jones Cup lost to a lot of teams in that tournament.
SoKor team that beats Racela’s team in 2002 by one point eventually won against Yao Ming, Gong XiaoBin, Hu Weidong, Bateer Menk(?) reinforced China (that’s their team A) to snag the title.
NO, Alapag is over. Rp team need to source some new PG that can play international competition.
2007 fiba automatically 1 seat occupied by China being a host country for 2008 summer olympics, no need to send chinese best player.
2002 Asian Games is doubtful by many,is was held in Busan, Korea.
The bottomline is the team they beat is China “B”. Whatever the reason for not sending their “A” is not the issue here.
2002 Asian Games is doubted by who? SoKor beats China “A”. PERIOD.
Why are you replying “NO, Alapag is over….”?
I said “IMHO, he should have been included in this year’s FIBA Asia”. It’s different from “Alapag should be included in future competitions.”
@hanoi,
Whoever you prefer for your national team, I have no right to dictate on you. they’re all good players.
I know Jimmy can dunk. But when did Jimmy performed the “in your face dunk against taller line up”?
Olcen racela done nothing from 2002 RP team, he was a good free throw shooter alltime his PBA career, during the dying seconds against korea when he least needed most,he fail to deliver that RP could have been won.
Jimmy discover playing in summer league against the likes of allen iverson. He is a threat from 3pt range when he play in NCAA div 2.
he showed in your face dunk in fron of lebanon coaching staff, point is,he can dunk the ball anytime he want
John Arrigo looks deceiving, but he has a soft gracefull move that can finish monstrous dunks even in front of 7ft marlou aquino.
You remind me a lot of a guy named Jimmy. and it’s not Alapag.
What do you mean he’s done nothing?
Were it not for Olsen’s shots in the fourth quarter, the Philippine team will not even be in a position to win the game.
Marlou Aquino is only 6’9. and not 7 footer.
And Alapag cannot dunk ANYTIME he wants. no he cannot.
Stop exaggerating please.
As I said, don’t argue with hanoi.. You won’t win..;p
Racela was a great addition in the 2002 RP Team.. His FT misses were either due to fatigue (he and Dondon were the reason why they got close to Korea) (Try to hit free throws when you’re dead tired, you’ll know what I mean) or he just choked..
Alapag was also a great add to the 2007 RP team.. He was even considered by EL-Khatib(?) as the best point guard in Asia..
I won’t argue hanoi..;p
lets not too technical here, of 6’9 with long arms.
Yes, don don and olcen help RP team to even get closer korea lead and almost win.
Another overrated is Hbomb hatfield, noy castillo.
Magic was there and was solidified with the arrival of Pat riley lakers known for fast breaks games, during Lakers-Sixers play offs, Maurice cheeks and Dr J.doing exactly the same from the other end of the court.
Alapag CAN dunk anytime he wants. He could be in 2002 and not 2007. Fans miss those kind of player in right place and right time..
RP has never defeated China national such a long time.Atleast, defeating even China Class D, still good exposure to RP team, all eyes are there. Who knows, there will be next fil/am to play again in NBA after Raymond.
Scottie Pippen once worked part time welder, hands and wrist are being expose, not a bad shooter at all.
Slingers being rust? I just like their masscots.
Alapag cannot dunk anytime he wants. No player can dunk anytime he wants. If he’s in the middle of the court, can he instantaneously jump and dunk that time? if he cannot then he cannot jump anytime.
= P
@mart, you refering to me? Eindhow is Hanoi. Hanoi is Eindhow. They are the same person.
@Jimmy,
I thought you don’t give a damn about the ABL, then how come you’re still here?
mart, i canot understand your last statement.
If i say marlou aquino if 6 footer, you can react, whats the big difference of 6″9 to 7″.
Jimmy can can finish a fast break with exclamation point anytime he want.
Yes, olcen racela was make big hits in fourth quarter, but looking back from quarter 1-3,he gives to many shots to person hes defending, hes just peanuts and liabilty in defense, not even in offense.
RP had hardtime beating Japan in the past, now Japan is beating RP.
Patham is flat footed,he surprise hes always free reciveing and shooting the ball. If hes not free, once he start to drible, either he commit travelling or can steal the ball from him. Unlike big guys from Dragons and Satria, they can move well.
John Arrigo is somehow unique to filipino point guard, at 6″4 he was legitimate PG in Alaska, not much different height with Reynel Hugnatan or Alvin Patrimonio, but thet are having totally different type of games.
Jummy Arroyo, Hanoi and Eindhow TOTALY different, i dont know anyone here. But i remember eindhow what i had blog on Slingerrock.
Im just new here, first time i watch Patriots Vs slingers, i just waiting both teams call time outs so i can watch the dancers, where im more entertain that watching the games. I have doubt about Gaco and Wainright.
Mirza is missing todays game against KL?
@MART:correction.USA Team(AIA) in jones cup 2007 only lost to Philippines and Jordan..
