Yanres Sports Arena, Manila, Saturday, December 19, 2009 – The Philippine Patriots bounced back from their thrashing by the Brunei Barracudas last week to edge past the KL Dragons 76-70 in an ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) game.
The game was tied 17-17 at the end of the first quarter and the Patriots managed to take a slim one-point (38-37) lead into half-time after trailing by seven at one point in the second.
The game remained close at the start of the fourth with the Patriots leading only by one (55-54) and with less than two minutes left, the Patriots still only led by two.
Nonoy Baclao, who missed the Barracudas game last week because he was playing for Ateneo in their Philippine Collegiate Champions League title win, was back this time to stiffen the defensive resolve of the Patriots.
Baclao sank a jumper to put them up 66-63 before Warren Ybanez sank a huge three-pointer with 1:43 to give the Patriots a comfortable five-point (71-66) lead before they wrapped up their eight win of the ABL campaign.
Brandon Powell finished with a game-high 20 points for the Patriots while teammate Jason Dixon had a double-double, scoring 15 points and 15 rebounds.
Baclao contributed eight points, three rebounds and two blocks.
“The toughest thing to do is to come back from a devastating loss. But luckily, our players performed well,” Patriots coach Louie Alas was quoted as saying in the Manila Bulletin.
“We failed to execute our plays, but in the end, we got huge breaks,” Alas told GMANews.tv. “Nonoy provided the intangibles again while our two imports also delivered.”
The Dragons, who fell to a 4-6 win-loss record, saw their main contributions from Chris Kuete (19 points, nine rebounds), Jamal Brown (15 points) and Rudy Lingganay (13).
The Patriots, who are 8-2, now need three wins from their remaining five games to finish top of the league and secure home-court advantage in the semi-final playoffs. The Patriots are a perfect 6-0 at home this season.
The Patriots next play the Brunei Barracudas on Monday, December 21st for their final game before the Christmas break and will resume the ABL season in an away game against the Singapore Slingers on January 6th.

Is Gaco and Wainright worth to play in Patriots?
this was a poorly refereed game. an obvious missed goal tending call on Kuete putting his hand just before the rim on a Dixon shot had the baseline referee (the Singaporean) not looking at the play. what was he day dreaming about? he also missed a lot of 3-second violations on Dixon.
Gaco and Wainright have proven they’re worthy in previous games. it’s just that their minutes were limited because Baclao and Powell were doing good this game. Wainright has always picked up the scoring if Powell has a bad night, and Baclao was kept in most of the time because he defends better than Gaco.
@limbo:Yes Patriots needs wainright because they need shooters because Patriots lacks shooters maybe because this team is a defensive team..
About Gaco,i dont think he deserve to be in the Patriots line up,even Raneses and Mirza..They need to find good forwards..There are lots of better forward players in Liga Pilipinas..
wainright is liability he shoots 0/4 in 3pt range, hes not consistent, not good defensive nor rebounder, he has commit couple of injury during his PBA career, he need to replace like Eddie Laure or Omanzie Rodrigues, or else new young guys from amateur.
Gaco undrafted in PBA, hes a banger, not a good defensive, he give foul counted or 3pt play to opposing team, not a good rebounder as well. He give unsportman foul. Gaco is liability.
I think Gaco and Wainright need to replace.
Alcaraz, good 3pts shooter, i never seen him played against slingers during 1st time they meet. Ybanes and Baguon need to practice more on 3pts.
Coronel i think not good PG as well. Raneses i think hes injured
Mirza i think already cut i never seen him play anymore?
Les, is Mirza still with Patriots?
Is the games between Patriots and Barracudas will be air to ESPN?
In addition, is there any new Asean import to SMB?
Hi Limbo, sorry for the late reply. Mirza’s name showed up in the last box score. He started the game.

As for Satria Muda’s import, I have no news about their new import yet. Will let you know when they do hire anyone.
