Patriots blow Barracudas away to strengthen grip on first place

Manila, Philippines, Monday, December 21 2009 – The Philippine Patriots beat the visiting Brunei Barracudas 70-56 to make up for their 70-95 loss to the Barracudas earlier in the month in Bandar Sri Begawan.
The Patriots took the first quarter 18-9 and led by as many as 21 points in the second before taking a 42-22 half-time lead.
The Barracudas, shooting only 26% from the field and out-rebounded 21-12 over the first two quarters, trailed by 12 at the end of the third at 41-53.
With two minutes left on the clock in the fourth, the Patriots had a commanding 13-point lead and were never in any danger of losing the game.
We played very good defense,” Patriots coach Louie Alas told the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “I told the team that if we compete with Brunei in a shootout, we’re bound to lose. And it’s good that we gave up only 22 points in the first half.”
Jason Dixon scored 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Patriots while teammate Rob Wainwright had 16 points, including three three-pointers.
Patriots remain top of the league with a 9-2 win-loss record and need another two wins to secure first place and home-court advantage in the semi-final playoffs.
The Barracudas fall to 4-6.

Now where is hanoi??;p
As I’ve said before in the previous article, opponents won’t score much with Nonoy and Elmer in the line up..
Eindhow, i had nothing against nony and elmer.
In international competition, usually zone defense apply.
Koreans are dreaded shooter, they train to shoot.
Coronel,Gaco and Wainright is doubtful here?
Whatever you say Hanoi..;p now how did Koreans get in the picture..
The Patriots will stick to what they have.. Gaco is great in the hustle but weak inn decision making.. Coronel will always be Coronel.. Wainright will rain it from the outside.. Good shot if it counts but dreadful when he misses..
There is no need to revamp the line up if you are number one in the league and winning..;p
Again, I won’t argue..;p
4th place will be a toss up between the Cudas and the Dragons.. Unless the Tigers still have something up their sleeves..
i had mentioned koreans are dreaded shooters, and defense are inefect for them. Baguion,Ricafuente and Alcaraz take back court.
Gaco is banger, not defensive player, he is prospect for opposition in getting foul counted/3pt play, no height as reounder, and gives unsportman foul.
Wainright, not good offensive player, liability in defense as well, have couple of injury when playing in PBA
These 3 people need to replace.
Coronel need to replace by good outside shooter
gaco need to replace by two legitimate forward or center. Wainright need to replace by swingman
I from Indonesia. Patriots is dirty team. I saw all their dirty fouls and elbows on SM players
i don’t get Hanoi. not just his English, also his train of thought.
he often mentions replacing Gaco, Wainright, and Coronel… but i can’t think of players who aren’t actively playing that can replace those 3. they’re the best players AVAILABLE and that’s all that matters.
here’s the best i can think of:
Gaco < JR Guerilla? nah, you prolly don't know who this guy is but i assure you, i'd pick Gaco over him.
Wainright < John Arigo? no.
Coronel < any big name college guard? Coronel has earned his slot with the Patriots. he's better than most college guards right now. if there are, PBL or Smart Gilas already has them.
I’m not sure if you can call the patriots as dirty players. I agree that there were times when it was uncalled for but generally I can say the patriots have played physically. Being physical and playing hard is not playing dirty. But sometimes players can get carried away.
Playing in international competetition, first thing to consider is to test your rhythm, shooting perimeter, within distance range or 3pt area. The koreans and chinese are drastically train for this aspects, not only they are tall but they can shoot, specially in their free throw.
First time i watched patriots vs slingers in start of season, patriots are not impressive at all, poor shooting percentage.
Players like Eddie laure, omanzie rodriguez, are good defensive player that may consider by patriot,if they are available, else source in PBL,liga pilipinas
CK, i beg to disagree, theres no such thing as dirty player in basketball, they are often describe as physical player, while i seen 2-3 elbows flying from SMB britama players than patriots during patriots-smb first encounter,
i agree with what hanoi said. in international competitions shooters have more edge than the slashers. what can a 2pt slasher do against a 3pt shooter?
Hanoi (can you stop using this name, you’re doing injustice to the Vietnamese with your grammar),
You are wrongas usual…
Dirty players do exist.
Giving cheap shots is different from being physical.
Take these cases:
1. burger King – SMART Gilas game – Arboleda tackle, Mattias’s elbow on Tiu.
2. Japan versus Philippines. Orimo was punched by Pinoy player during the game, and was totally ineffective since.
3. Youth Games – Sokor versus Philippnes. A Korean player was sucker punched.
That’s not being Physical, that’s being dirty.
Gaco is virtually untouchable in the Patriots lineup. Owner Mikee Romero would no dispatch a loyal Harbour Centre player. And he can deliver.
mart, using any name is TOTALLY NONE of your business.
Again, there is no such thing as dirty player, no single player ever
think to hurt or paralyzed any player from any team, just for a single win? Dirty reactions often comes as retaliation only.
Dispatching Gaco or not, doesnt care, as long as hes playing with Patriots, SMB,KL Dragons,Slingers or any ASEASN team, will forever developed a wrong thought about your filipino players.
hanoi, no such thing as dirty player? You don’t know basketball…
CK, two things.
1. is Lewis exist in Basketball ?
2. Do you watch exhibition recent games between slingers vs ginebra? whom you think physical player there which unseen by many?
@hanoi,
Yes, it’s none of my business, but I have Vietnamese friends and officemates, I don’t want you embarassing them.
One advice:
“Mag-Tagalog ka na lang…”
the only player who’s available right now and could make an impact on any ABL team right away is Rudy Hatfield. If Darren Ng doesn’t have any obligations with NBL anymore then he may be the other one. Arigo is damaged goods who already is low quality in the first place.
Why would anyone in their right mind would change their team line-up when they already are doing well and are on the top spot? it should be the other teams, most specially Slingers who should be thinking of a major shake-off in their roster right now.
to quote “Kl dragons almost beat Patriots”,, It’s not what the Slingers did right, it’s about us.”?
ABL is an eye opener, if Patriots win single games or championship, perhaps more convincing.
Slingers already beat all other teams, what for to change the roster?
@mart, “Gaco is virtually untouchable in the Patriots lineup loyal Harbour Centre player”, how can this guy play center position in ABL ?
Uhmm.. @et crackers Harbour Centre is the name of the team..
No need for a revamp in a line-up for ANY team.. Especially this late in the season..
A great asset about this league is that teams have some sort of a balance because of the presence of the imports or foreign players — as evident in a previous loss by the Patriots against the Barracudas.
I still notice that there’s still some sense of a national team like atmosphere, which is understood considering that this is a new concept for most of us and this is the first league that involve multiple countries. Just about this, in the NBA the only Canadian based team is the Toronto Raptors, does this mean that the entire nation of Canada would cheer for them?
What I really wanted to see as far as imports are concerned, is that teams are utilize based on a particular role, e.g., provide ceiling or fill a gap in certain positions, not as a do it all or Michael Jordan type. This means the player is not always the go to guy or do all the rebounding, points, and defending. Instead focus on some of the intangibles. This will certainly give the locals a more proactive role in the court not depending too much on the imports — a practice that I always notice through the years watching Basketball in Philippines.
The ABL is certainly more entertaining than reading news about SEABA games, and this will be very good for basketball.
What is the tie breaking criteria for this league? This is because I was playing around with the standings and I noticed that the game between Singapore Slingers and Phlippine Patriots on January 2nd would create a huge impact for the top spot heading through the playoffs. This is especially true for the Slingers and Satria Muda (SM). I also excluded every tie breaking scenarios since I am not that familiar about them. So I just based everything on the points being awarded every game.
Here are the scenarios:
- If the Philippine Patriots beat the Singapore Slingers, the Patriots are just a win away from securing the number 1 spot. That’s because the worst that can happen is for the team to finish at 11-4 with 26 points — assuming that the Patriots would end up winning 2 out of their last 4 assignments. This will deny the Slingers and SM a chance for the top spot.
- For Singapore, they need to win their remaining games to finish at 11-4 (26 points), and hope that the Patriots would lose two games. Singapore can lose one more game, but the Patriots would lose 3 games, and SM would lose one.
- For Satria Muda, they have to win all their remaining and hope that the Slingers would lose 2 of their last 5 games, and the Patriots would lose all of their remaining games. This will enable SM to finish at top at 10-5 with 25 points while Singapore and Philippines would both wound up at 9-6 with 24 points.
I will update this once I get to know the actual tie breaking criteria.
Thanks for being patient to read such a long post.
If two teams are tied on points, then the head-to-head record between the two is brought into consideration.
Teams play each other a total of 3 times throughout the season.
I can’t help but notice that the Patriot’s homecourt is almost empty. It would really be better if they play in Cebu instead of Manila as Manilenos are too engrossed with PBA. Cebuanos are the type of people who would support any Filipinos playing against foreigners and they have showed that during FIBA U-16 games. Even coach ALtamirano praised the Cebuanos for this.
To wayklaro,
There’s a conversation about the attendance of Filipino fans of Patriots games in the venue. It’s not that fans in Manila doesn’t care, but they cited the following reasons why:
- One person posted that not a lot of people in Manila is aware of the existence of the ABL, which is amusing.
- Another is that there are tons of Basketball leagues that are based in Manila. These are the NCAA, UAAP, PBL, high school leagues, and of course the PBA. Of note, PBA’s attendance isn’t that great either unless they play in the province.
- They also cited poor marketing of the league in Manila, and close to no television coverage. If there is one, it’s most likely in cable. So how about fans that doesn’t have cable? Now the venue, it tends to confuse the fans on where the game is going to be held. One game is at Ynares, and some times it’s at San Juan. I think the Patriots should pick a single venue to call it their home. I know the intent is similar to PBA’s approach to bring the games closer to the fans, but if they really want to establish the so called “home court,” it’s gotta be played in a single stadium.
If you want to read more about this, I think you can check out the article related to KL fans going to Singapore to cheer for their team.
mart, how could you know that your right? your a good basketball encyclopedia, but respect basketball, your your credibility had been damage.”AIA lost to several teams in 2007?
@wayklaro22 i agree with you, to consider that cebu have a rich history of producing good players..
@lrangels, yes lots of basketball leagues in Phils, ABL though commerical but represents the country.. I dont aware much in recent Laos SEA Games why basketball is not included, while big venue for football is accomodated? Less 1 gold for RP?
@Les, Patriots and slingers will meet 3 times as well? are you sure? i only see Jan 6? for their second encounter.
The 6th Jan encounter between the Slingers and Patriots at the Singapore Indoor Stadium will be the third meeting between the two teams.
Each team has beaten the other once.
All teams play each other three times.
Fixtures here:
http://redhoops.com/asean-basketball-league-fixtures/
@HANOI-OS: AIA is only beaten twice in Jones cup 2007.Philippines and Jordan..Lebanon,Iran,Qatar etc. was beaten by AIA by a big margin and dispite the two losses they still won the Championship…
Les, yes i remember now, it was the first loss of Slingers, with less 1-2 players due to some reasons!
I wish all the ABL games are shown either live or delayed telecast over ESPN.
Should be upload videos on weekly basis over ABL websites, for those who doesn’t have ESPN chanel at home.
@Irangels : The info that you just gave kind of supports my clamor to have Cebu as the home court rather than Manila.
first, there is only one major regular basketball event in Cebu which is CESAFI (cebu’s collegiate league).
2nd, you don’t need a hyped-up marketing in Cebu as people there are naturally basketball addicts, they just have to know that there’s a home and away basketball event and people will come in bunches as they did to support our U-16 FIBA national team which don’t even have a Cebuano player.
remember the MBA days? tickets are always sold-out the day before the game….of course there are always some left from the scalpers.
wayklaro22, i agree, good or bad marketing not a reason for filipino fans, most especially when it comes to basketball.
Other example is Metallica Concert in Manila sometimes April 1993, not much advertisement aside from NU 101,but the tickets are sold out, not only supporting the half filipino/american lead guitarist, but offcourse the whole band mambers..
Regards to defunt MBA, where are then the players then Cris clay,Mike Garcia,Omanzie rodriguez, eddie laure, they are same batch with Don camaso, perhaps they can still play in ABL?
To hanoi and wayklaro, both of you are correct. However, I am not the one who posted those comments originally — just relaying the infor to you. I think we should also look at the ownership of the team. The Patriots is owned by Mikee Romero and Tony Boy Cojuanco, who happend to be Manila-based owners, which has the final word as far as team location is concerned (this happens in US sports too). If a person like J.H. Lhuiller owned the team, there’s no doubt that the team will be based in Cebu.
I am not sure if anyone here is involved with the PBA forums, but I mentioned it there that I wanted to have a Cebu based team next season or two with Philippine Patriots changing its name (dropping Philippine on it, may be changing it to Manila). This will certainly re-ignite the Manila-Cebu or Cebu-Manila rivalry which will be great for ASEAN fans to see and will be highly beneficial for the league’s success because rivalries like that fuels the league (think of the Celtics-Lakers rivalry in the 80s). So far I am sensing some sort of a KL Dragons and Singapore Slingers rivalry brewing up — reminiscent of the days Singapore playing in the Malaysian Football league.
Les, thanks for the info regarding the tie-breaking scenario.
In that case, the game on January 6th between the Patriots and the Slingers will be huge because the winner will own the tie-break scenario should there be a 3-way tie for first place along with Satria Muda (SM). Keep in mind both Singapore and Patriots have won their series against SM, 2-1 and 3-0 respectively. I think that the Barracudas and Dragons are still in the hunt for first place, but they would need extreme help from all other teams. So I would just simply break it down for the Patriots, Slingers, and Satria Muda as the best three teams contending for the top spot.
The playoff scenario didn’t change that much now with the tie-break in place (thanks again Les) we got:
- Patriots: a win on January 6 will clinch first place period!
- Slingers: Beat the Patriots, need to win their remaining games (or 3 out of their last 4 games), and need the Patriots to lose at least one (or two) more game(s).
- Satria-Muda: Win all their remaining games, need the Patriots to lose all of theirs, and need Singapore to lose 2 of their last 5 games.
I forgot to add. If the Patriots lose to the Slingers, they have to win all their remaining games.
Celtics-Lakers are known, but Lakers-Sixers is what i like most in the 1981-1983 NBA playoffs, especiall when Sixers eliminated Celtics in eastern finals in Celtics homecourt and celtics fans shouting “Beat L.A”..
I sense it will be Slingers-KL Dragons battle it out for 3-4 place, because ABL have american reinforcer, unfortunate to Thailand they drop to last place, they might be good for 3-4th placer if pure asean players only. Lucky on th epart of slingers that they have import complimented to their team, else they are in 6th place..
I reiterate again what i mentioned earlier to Patriots.
1. Change 2-3 players, else they will face difficulty to get the championshis, but they will win.
2. Change 2-3 players, they can easily walk with the title.
Mr. Lhuillier currently has a Cebuano team that plays for a certain league ( i dont know where ) and his team has actually beaten some PBA teams and gave some a good scare during the PBA pre-season. All of those games of course are played in Cebu and the locals got a lot of home court support despite playing against certified stars.
I hope Mr. Lhuillier brings his team to ABL for the next season.
Hopefully too, Mr. Lina might want to revive his former “Laguna Lakers” in ABL which will be composed of reserves and practice players from “Burger King”. Laguna also has a great basketball fan-base.
oh, and good luck to the Patriots and the Slingers. Hope to see Rudy Hatfield in that Patriots roster and Darren Ng on the Slingers soon.
Having stayed in Singapore for a while kind of made me a 60% patriot fan and a 40% Slinger as well, hehe.
@ Hanoi :
Chris clay -wasn’t able to present some papers to prove his Filipino lineage so technically, he’s not considered a Fil-Am.
Omanzie Rodriguez on the other hand might be older now and might not have the shot blocking prowess that he once had in the MBA. centers and forwards in the ABL are also composed of mostly American imports and i don’t think Rodriguez and his broomstick built can match-up with them.
Garcia? nah, he just had a few high flying highlights in the MBA and that’s all. he’s just good for a slam dunk contest which the ABL don’t have yet.
Eddie LAure is still active in the PBA.I think he’s playing for the Barako bulls.
Hope someone could post the names of PBA stars with expiring contracts. The 4 PBA teams under San Miguel Corporation is like a talent haven for future ABL prospects, I would look into those contracts if i were an ABL team manager.
Eddie Laure is with Rain or Shine..
Cris clay does not look fil at all actually. There is 1 more player in PBA that doesnt have filipino blood but still currently playing.
Rodriguez is broomstick built, same batch with Camaso, but i think hes more better than Gaco.
About Hatfiled, yes i agree he is an outstanding player no doubt about it, but i consider him as overrated player, together with Noy Castillo,Olcen Racela and Mik Penisi, this 4 person should not be included in previous RP team, first time i heard they play back then, i knew disastrous in the end. Same thing with Bunevacz.
According to my source, it is impossible for rudy hatfield to play for any abl teams. unless he will reap a higher salary than his previous ginebra contract, unfortunately, ginebra wasnt able to match up his demand…..show him the money and he will play.besides,he is busy with his spiritual mission around the world.
Maybe the H-bomb already hang-off his jersey permanently..
Better to sign up young players than former PBA player to play in any ABL team.
I agree with Andrew. However, in a start-up league, it’s pretty hard to lure young players since their options are much more than some of the washed out or former PBA players — money wise. May be some of the undrafted rookies can be recruited.
Although let’s not lose faith ‘cuz once the ABL gets through the first three seasons, and establish or prove the region that this league will be around for about 10 years or so, it would be easier to attract young and up coming players from Philippines.
its funny how i skip comments from hanoi
his english nonsense makes me dizzy
somebody needs a girlfriend.
btw anybody got any updates if smb is going to push thru with adding an asean import.. i see them as a tougher team than slingers.. they can be a big scare depending on who will be their next filipino import.
As of now, there are really a lot of doubts as to whether this league could last a few seasons. As of now, the venue attendances are dismal while i doubt if the TV ratings are also doing well specially because its not shown on major local free channels.
If i haven’t heard of ABL and tuned in to a game for the first time, it’s also quite irritating how the game is amateurly broadcasted. They really have to find decent game analysts to broadcast their games, some of them can’t even speak good English.
They would also have to improve their website…everybody knows redhoops is far better than their official website. More marketing would also be helpful specially if they advertise their games on TV.
SMB are better than slingers, indo perhaps are next to filipinos in ASEAN.
i am from indonesia. Philippine patriots are not a good team.
Slingers just got lucky to beat SMB because the absence of one import.
@maz, if patriots is not a good team then what you call a team that they trashed 3 times like smb? and do i have to add they dont have a win yet againts the patriots.. saying that patriots is not a good team is just like saying that smb is a really bad team.
3stars, aside from not being a good team, they are also dirty player.
