Kelapa Gading, Jakarta, Wednesday, February 3, 2010 – Satria Muda BritAma thrashed the Singapore Slingers 74-45 to even up the best-of-three series 1-1 in the semi-finals of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).
Nakiea Miller and Alexander Hartman provided the one-two punch which deflated the Slingers from tip-off, while their local teammates stepped up in the absence of starter Christian Sitepu who is sidelined for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
Miller bossed the Slingers on both ends of the court and finished with 24 points, 16 rebounds and an ABL record nine blocks, while the flamboyant Hartman added 15 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
The dynamic duo themselves out-scored the Slingers till the fourth quarter of the game, which by then had become a mere formality as the home team led 56-35.
Michael LeBlanc led the Slingers with 14 points, but Al Vergara was the only other Slinger in double digits with 10, as the team shot an ABL-record low 24% field goal percentage. Their 15 field goals were the lowest in the league as well.
A pumped-up Satria Muda team came out with greater aggression, and maintained it the entire game as the Slingers were porous in defence and toothless in attack. The home team led by 10 after the first quarter, 17 at the half, and extended it to as many as 34 late in the final period, as both coaches emptied their benches to end the game.
It was arguably the Slingers’ worst display of the season so far. They were outrebounded by 13 and out-scored 44-14 in the paint by their rampant opponents, whose local players contributed 35 points, led by Welyanson Situmorang’s 12 points on 5 for 5 shooting.
The deciding game is now scheduled for Singapore on February 7th, 2010, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

No Worries Mate (Marcus Voice)…you gotta know how to loose in order to WIN….BESIDES looking at the score/game SOMEBODY had their OWN agenda!! lol
GOOOO SLINGERS and
H A P P Y B I R T H D A Y …M L B!!!! WE LUV YOOOU!!!
SMB should beat SLingers in their home court, fair and clean..
SMB looked more driven on court. They won. Miller had his moment. Good for them.
By now, I have read more of the various blogs and posts on Miller’s reactions after game 1. I am not impressed. Way too much “me,me,me” for my liking….Our guys have more dignity and carry themselves better on and off thecourt. Anyone else saw Miller playing it up to the TV cameras during the telecast???
But hey…… thats just one guys opinion.
Slingers need to find some “anger” of their own. Game 3 is in our house.
Go Slingers!!!
@Dora… the agenda is in da house this sunday =)
@Kelvin – i still ask myself if singapore indoor stadium is really the slingers house, a lot of times the host fans presence is not really there. you have a weak home crowd lah, all are timid fan, and they are still proud to say that they really support the slingers team..i doubt it.
If slingers lose, no more games here in sis, too bad, end for slingers..
@ nolah…..
I know…SIS is still very far from being the Boston Garden…but we are improving as the season goes on. I can see that the team is winning over more fans, with their fighting displays, and in my opinion with the way they carry themselves on and off the court.
For me personally, the latter has been the key in my transition from interested observer to committed Slinger fan. And its not just about who is winning…..Slingers may get eliminated on Sunday….I THINK NOT……. but I know that SMB are good enough a team that we cannot be sure. I know that the Patriots are the team with the strongest team sheet, and they have home court, so whoever progresses will have an uphill fight in the next series…..but I am happy to support MY SLINGERS. I like the way they play and I like the way they behave. Kudos to Coach A and the boys.
Our crowd consists of the expats who had pro sports culture from their home environments, some ppl given complimentary tickets by their companies who are sponsors or partners, some hardcore local bball followers, and increasing numbers of youngsters who play in school and maybe idolize some of their local heroes on the team…and of course lots of “visitors” who support their home country teams. First few games, ppl were there just to watch the games, they either stayed quiet or they clapped politely (for both teams) on good plays. Now I can sense the crowd getting behind their team.
We’re (arguably) not as “motivated” as the Indonesian or Malaysian home crowds…but we’re better off than the Thais…(don’t know about the Pinoys or Bruneians), and we are paying for tickets…which is important to the franchise.
You say we are timid….I guess this is not totally untrue..depends on whom you are measuring us against…….but hey, our home crowd is generating “hate mails” and “ hate posts”…so we must be doing something right!!!
kelvin..very touching, is there anybody here who has a hanky?!
i hope ul have a good crowd on sunday. part of me still cheers on the slingers because of Al Vergara.
@ nolah…
are we having a baskteball related discussion or are you writting to brag and rub it in. my mistake on thinking too highly of you.
@ nolah…
are we having a baskteball related discussion or are you writting to brag and rub it in. my mistake on thinking too highly of you.
I am standing up for my team. WTF are you doing??
easy now kelvin! just keep on standing there, ill stand here..
So which is it? Are the Slinger fans too rowdy or too timid? You guys seem to want to have it both ways. Take a position and stick with it. You lose credibility when you’re not consistent.
Frankly I think Nolah and Hanoi are too buy typing with one hand to have a serious basketball discussion.
I just can’t wait for game 3.
Oh, the SIS is a real special place and the slinger fans are really unique.
We win both awards
1. The most loud, rude, arrogant fans in the ABL with no manners – slinger fans
2. The most docile, quiet, timid fans in the ABL who are outshone by opposing team fans in their own homecourt – slinger fans
Its awesome – the rest of the league has the most knowledgable fans who insist that we take both these awards!!
Irangels, buy ticket and see you here in SIS this sunday.
YEEEES @FAN…the AGENDA is to “BRING THE THUNDER” N QUIET THE NOISE!! (people n ego’s) once n for all…how WE say in the states…the people that talk ALOT…let them talk… when MOVERS N SHAKERS come WE let our actions SPEAK for themselves. CHECK MATE!!!! LOL
GOOO SLINGERS N OF COURSE GOOO MLB..I LUV U!!
moh, the absurd range of accusations against the Slingers fans is the best indication yet that our 6th man is doing something right. One boorish player tried to blame his bad behavior on the fans and it didn’t work. The Slingers fans bring it again on Sunday.
…and so will the Slingers!
the slingers fans are the team’s 6th man indeed. Fan is 1st, moh is 2nd, slingtown fan is 3rd, dora is 4th, deanna is 5th and kelvin the 6th man.. is there anybody else guys? just raise your hand please..
okay im also in, your 7th man here.
Slingtown fan is slingerrock, slingerrock is slingtown fan
Just enjoy the games this weekend. If slingers lost, patriots fan cannot able to watch live games as it will shifted to Britama.
while it is good to watch how the patriots demolish the slingers just infront of their hometown crowds.
@Marcus
Slingtown fan is not Slingerrocks.
I can see their emails (hidden from readers, of course) as a moderator.
i want to watch game 3 on sunday!
so less what happened to slingerrocks… is he still posting, i haven’t posted for sometime but i constantly visit your site for more details.
I don’t know whether slingerrocks is still posting or not because as you all already know, you can have multiple aliases and emails. But I know for sure Slingtown fans is not Slingerrocks.
cheers.
well you can see his email… I’m just wondering if he is still posting using a different alias. you know he is one of the more popular guys in this site… i mean he has been an attraction, wouldn’t it be a waist if you let go of such a hardcore fan
perhaps busy recruiting his neighbors and bring all his allies for this sunday game…
Nolah, since there are only 7 of us timid Slingers fans by your count, I guess we must also be the same rabblerousers that Miller and his SMB fans were complaining about. Please wear your ‘Boo Hoo Miller’ T-shirt so I can find you in the crowd.
huh?! thanks slingtown fan but i aint gonna wear any shirt to show my support to your team unless its a jersey of AL Vergara..it seems that slingtown fan isnt really slingerrocks.
But I thought you were counting yourself as our 7th fan, Nolah? Well, I guess we’ll just have to get by without you. We’ll manage.
And if there is anyone still in doubt about it, no, I am not slingerrocks.
all the best for your team slingtownfan.
Call me a fool, but I am going to attempt to initiate a serious discussion here. This thread has touched on the topics of fan support and home court advantage, so I don’t think I am off-topic to post this.
Have a look at the regular season standings at the top of this page. Only one team had a winning record on the road. Even the league-leading Patriots lost more games on the road than they won. The regular season is 15 games which means that 3 teams will have 8 home and 7 away games while the other 3 teams will have 7 home games and 8 away games. Maybe it’s factor, maybe it’s not, but the 3 teams with 8 home games finished 1-2-3 and the 3 teams with 8 away games finished 4-5-6.
Also each team plays each of the other teams 3 times. That is good in that it provides a natural tie breaker. In the event that two teams end up with identical overall records, one of those two teams must win a best-of-3 head-to-head series. But it is bad in that one of those two teams will have 2 games on their home court. A definite advantage.
I don’t know how the league schedule is determined, but you would have a real advantage if you could influence the making of the schedule such that you play 2 games against the league’s best teams on your home court while playing 2 away games against the weaker teams. But I guess at the start of this season, we didn’t know who the stronger and weaker teams would be, did we?
Maybe the ABL can put some thought into a more balanced schedule next year. More teams in the league would be fantastic. We play the entire season to determine which 2 teams don’t go to the play-offs.
wouldn’t a 4 game match be much better… it’s a lot fairer, 2 games away and 2 games home vs. the-same team… @ slingtown fan, are you related to slingerrocks, i can see that you have that same hardcore fanaticism, being self destructive kind off.
@Slingtown
Thanks for the insightful analysis.
There will be two more teams next year – one from Vietnam and one more from Indonesia.
just watch and enjoy the game, Miller is experienced pros,he will just give a good basketball lesson to jeffers.
For next year ABl season, i prefer to watch just 1 american reinforcer and 3 asean imports, this will also test how singapore basketball level to neighboring regions, in my point of view, for local players, slingers are the weakest team, just got lucky to have good coach and the presence of jeffers have big difference.
@jake, you belong to the same league of anti-fans who bite at the Slingers and the fans at any opportunity when WE the real fans won’t give a rift about you.
Les, is this confirm? i heard ABL requesting 2 teams from Phils, might be Cebu City will represent or Pampanga, this city can represent a competitive team for their their own,and players not come from any collegiate team
For Vietnam, there are couple of history of hiring filipino players and coach in the past, but for next abl season, else they can hire any SEA players, aside from filipino.
@Slingtown fan – That’s a very good observation! Brilliant suggestion to the ABL I must say, though I wonder if the scheduling also has to do with availability of the home court because other than Satria Muda and KL Dragons, the other teams are using a multi-purpose venue.
The top 3 teams had 8 home games as opposed to the bottom 3 teams and given how tight the points system is, it’d made a difference.
I thought about this when writing a Tigers story recently, they have the worst schedule of all having 5 consecutive Away games in a month!
Tigers Schedule – HAAHAHAAAAAHHHH
Though they had 4 consecutive Home games after BUT their season has already ended (ie. out of playoffs) by the last Away game in Dec 17. Not only is this schedule dampening to the morale of the players if they keep losing on the road (which is the norm than the exception) I think that killed them completely because it’d be hard to convince spectators to show up for the last 4 Home games with nothing to play for.
Poor Tigers.
@Jan, you touched on another issue that I have with the ABL – the points system. It’s just bloody stupid. Only in this league can you advance in the standings by losing a game. In sports such as football where a tie final score is an option, it makes sense to award 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and zero points for a loss. But to reward a team with a point for a losing effort is absurd. A team that is 0-2 would be tied in the standings with a team that is 1-0. Do you really need a points system to tell you which of those two teams has the better record?
The real measure of the standings is the winning percentage – number of games won divided by number of games played. The points system as practiced by the ABL has no meaning unless all the teams have played the same number of games. For most of this season, that was never the case.
@les? werd you get the news about the vietnam and another indonesian team.. an article bout that will be appreciated or at least tell us your source.. salamat(thanks)
Slingerrocks is back!! missed u!! lol Slingtown fan is hitting the nail on the head, Kelven too, Dora & I seem to be on the same page as well… hmmnnn… After the ignorent posts by the duo from SM need I say more?? this is very interesting reading here folks… lol… now Slingers have home court advantage & I for one, hope the fans scream their heads off at this game!! Lots of cheering for our Slingers ok Fans??!!! GOOO SLINGERS!!!!
Jake: U can come out of the closet, we know who u are NM!!!!! LOL!!!
Great news there will be 8 teams in the ABL next season & counting??
Peace out…
I agree with Slingtown fan. Silly point system. I understand the point system is used by FIBA in tournament play to prevent unnecessary walkovers in cases where teams try to avoid a strong team in the next round. But for league play, it seems absurd.
My source with regards to the extra teams? Well, I don’t think I should say who cos if I did, nobody will talk to me anymore. But it’s a credible source.
However, I could be wrong since I don’t own the league : )
Perhaps singapore can provide another team,by way of promoting this sports.
jan says: “The top 3 teams had 8 home games as opposed to the bottom 3 teams and given how tight the points system is, it’d made a difference.”
Just for fun, let’s suppose a scenario where the roles are reversed – the teams that played played 8 home games play 7 instead and the teams that play 7 home games play 8. Let’s further assume that the change of venue influences the outcome of those three games that we have rescheduled. So the top 3 teams each lose one more game while the bottom 3 teams each win one more game. By the points system we take one point away from the top 3 teams and give that point to the bottom three teams. Now the final standings look like this: Patriots 25pts, Slingers 24pts, SMB 22pts, Dragons 23pts, Barracudas 22pts, Tigers 19pts.
Now the Dragons move up to third place and SMB move down to a 4th place tie with the Barracudas. Just by moving the venue of 3 games, we have given a pretty decent shakeup to the final standings. Keep in mind this is just a hypothetical, folks. Either you accept my premises or you don’t. Just for fun.
@Deana, if Miller and crew try their trash-talking antics again today, they are going to get it right back in their faces. If I foul out by losing my voice before the game is over, so be it.
BTW Les, there appears to be a problem with your numbers for the Patriots in the standings table at the top of this page. You show them to be 8-0 at home and 2-5 away, but that doesn’t jive with their overall record of 11-4. Peace!
Just wait for the results this afternoon.
Hartman got injured, in this case, -20pts for SMB, Slingers have high chance to play for finals!
whats up with deanna, papansin talaga ang gurang na to, picking up on youngsters… go find someone your own age. by the way what do you mean you know me, and what’s in the closet? i hope it’s not your dusty skeletons… lol
You crack me up, Hanoi-Tragedy. You try to relate every post on this website back to the Philippines Patriots and then when we start something resembling a reasonable discussion on this thread, you say, “Just wait for the results this afternoon”. You are a regular riot.
@Slingtown fan: thanks for catching the mistake! We’ll fix it.
