Since the first ASEAN Basketball League season is two-thirds of the way through and rosters are now settled, who do you think would make a dream starting five?
Let’s have fun with a reader-nominated and reader-driven poll, shall we?
If you think there are still players who deserve to be in the poll, let us know in the comments section.
Each reader will have 12 votes and you have to use your votes all at one go.
The player who has the most votes for that position (PG, SG, SF, PF, C) will be in the starting five while the player with the second highest number of votes for that position will make the Red Hoops all-star team.

Have fun everyone! As usual, don’t kill each other : )
Rudy Lingganay – PG – Dragons
Hands down the best scoring point guard in the league. Quickness in unrivalled and not afraid of penetrating despite small size.
Piyapong Piroon – SG – Tigers
Go-to scorer for Thailand Tigers can be dangerous when his jumpshots are falling.
Alex Hartman – F – Britama
One of the sweetest strokes in the ABL. Defenders cringe everytime he gets an open shot. Is also dangerous on the open break as he can both pass and finish with his excellent ballhandling.
Chris Kuete – F – Dragons
Closest thing the ABL has to Dwayne Wade.
Jamal Brown – C – Dragons
Strong defensive presence, altering shots inside and cleaning the glass. Also has reliable post moves and can shoot the 3.
SF : Reggie Larry – Barracudas
PG : Al Vergara -Slingers
C : Jamal Brown – Dragons
SG : Francis Adriano – Barracudas
PF : Alexander Hartman – Satria Muda
Rudy “Little Warrior” Lingganay – PG – Dragons

Eager to watch these combinations:
JP Alcarazp_PG-Patriots
Can set the table as easily as he can look for his own score, the true dreaded shooter.
Leo Avenido-SG-Baracudas
very versatile.
Elmer Espiritu-Patriots.
360-degree, double-clutch jam! “Human Highlight Film”
Chaz Briggs-PF-Tigers
Runs the floor extremely well, and monster shotblocker.
Jason Dixon-Center-Patriots.
Has a nice touch on his shot and range to about 20 feet and in.
PG – Wei Long
SG – Desmond Oh
SF – Steven Khoo
PF – Pathman
C – Nwankwo
My Mythical 5! dreamteam!
anyway, any idea on how the all-star teams will be composed.
team A vs. team B
blue team vs. red team
north all-stars vs. south all-stars
west all-stars vs. east all-stars
all-imports vs. all-asean team
i’ll include Chaz Briggs (F, THA) as a reinforced import on my all-asean team.
There won’t be an all-star game organised by the ABL. This all-star voting only happens on Red Hoops and just for our own fun. ; )
Rudy Lingganay – PG – KL Dragons
High-scoring fireball of a point guard with sweet jab-step and crossover moves. Al Vergara’s future successor on the Phillipines national team?
Chris Kuete – SG – KL Dragons
Tireless ironman, plays multiple positions, does it all for the Dragons (scoring, rebounds, blocks, ball handling). Just like NBA’s Latrell Sprewell back in 1993-94.
Reggie Larry – SF – Brunei Barracudas
Haven’t seen him play in person, but numbers don’t lie (league leader in points, assists and steals per game).
Alexander Hartman – PF – Satria Muda BritAma
Brings toughness to Satria Muda and is downright nasty. Looking forward to see this guy play tonight.
Attaporn Lertmalaiporn – F/C – Thailand Tigers
ABL’s best non-import. Lanky left-hander with shifty moves that make him hard to defend.
Honourable mentions: B. Guganeswaran (Dragons), Faisal Julius (Satria Muda), Ratdech Kruatiwa (Tigers)
ok lets have fun
PG – Rudy Distrito
SG – Winnie Arboleda
SF – Robert Jaworski
PF – Ranidel De Ocampo
C- Bonel Balingit
Team No Fear! Team 999 or 911!
Coach – Ron Artest
All star should organize, as well 3pts and slum dunk competition?
3 pts = JP Alcaraz vs tigers shooting guard?
Slum dunk= Elmer Espiritu vs slinger flyboy?
Defesive Line-Up
C – Ike Nwamkwo: Shot Blocker, Former MVP of the Pan-Am League
PF – Nonoy Baclao: Shot Blocker, #2 UAAP Defensive Player (Sr. year) and Former UAAP Finals MVP
SF – A. Lertmalaiporn: Scorer, he can provide the scoring bulk.
SG – Elmer Espiritu: Scorer/Rebounder/#1 UAAP Defensive Player (Sr. year)
PG – Reggie Larry: big, agressive and relentless point guard who can score at will.
dream 5 you say?
PG: Rudy Lingganay (KL) – most entertaining PG of the ABL
SG: Chris Kuete (KL) – possibly the best athlete
SF: Reggie Larry (BRU) – best all-around player (thanks to those minutes)
PF: Alexander Hartman (SMB) – imagine SMB without him
C : Kyle Jeffers (SIN) – most consistent big man
take out the foreign imports, i’d pick Lingganay, Avenido, Porn, and Baclao. i can’t think of a deserving local center.
go!fight! go! fight! philippines is the best
Kiko Adriano-Small Guard-Barracudas
Hi Les,
Just thought I’d point out that Guganeswaran of KL Dragons is no a C, he’s a PG.
why does Elmer Espiritu have the most # of votes so far? UE fanboys? sure he does all those highlight slams in the PBL and UAAP, but he really hasn’t done much in the ABL because his minutes are limited. it’s like Chinese people voting McGrady and Iverson to the All-Star Team.
All Star Team B:
PG-Warren Ybanez-Patriots
G-Khasim Mirza-Patriots
F-Reggy Larry-Barracudas
F-Nonoy Baclao-Patriots
C-Mark Andaya-Patriots
Thanks. I’ve corrected Guganeswaran’s position.
I’ve also added Mirza and Andaya to the poll.
Francis Adriano, SG (Brunei Barracudas)
Michael LeBlanc, PF (Singapore Slingers)
Nakiea Miller, C (Satria Muda BritAma)
Reggie Larry, SF ( Brunei Barracudas)
Wong Wei Long, PG (Singapore Slingers)
Francis Adriano – sg – Barracudas
Andaya – c – Patriots
Pathman – Pf – Slingers
Faisal – pg – Satria
Francis Adriano, SG (Brunei Barracudas)
Reggie Larry, SF ( Brunei Barracudas)
Wong Wei Long, PG (Singapore Slingers)
Celedon Camaso, SF (Brunei Barracudas)
Esmond Tan, PG (Brunei Barracudas)
No handsome player from Patriots..
Best 5 local dunkers: elmer espiritu, “Flyboy” Hong Wei Jian, Francis Adriano, Chee Li Wei, Attaporn Lertmalaiporn
@leah, there is JP Alcaraz,former Knights…
Leah quote: “No handsome player from Patriots..”
it’s Mark Andaya. he’s been linked to a young celebrity, that was about two or three years ago.
“SG: Chris Kuete (KL) – possibly the best athlete”, offcourse with his skeletal body..
Esmond Tan, PG (Brunei Barracudas)
Francis Adriano, SG (Brunei Barracudas)
Isn’t Espirtu SF/PF/C?
Espiritu is 6″3 he play for C/F in UAAP, but for any international competition, he can switch to G position
Patriots are alloting more minutes to the wrong dudes…
I see Elmer getting the top spot here. I respect him as a player and I think he deserves that place on top. But as a patriots fan, I expect that Espiritu and Baclao show the same kind of game that I saw and cheered for during the UAAP season 72.
The reason why Elmer and Baclao can’t show the same kind of game is cos the ABL is a stronger league.
Agreed, they seem to be good defensively at sitting in the paint and blocking the smaller guards driving in but they get abused in post up play by the import forwards and centres. They don’t have the size to play inside at this level. The slinger runs were made when they both were on court.
I disagree, Espiritu in particular has faced bigger men and better defensive players before. He came from a collegiate team which had a height disadvantage compared to other teams. Baclao on the other hand, I might agree with that since he has always dominating over smaller guards.
Being the top scorer among the Singaporeans, I think Wei Jian deserves to be in the ballot
Yes, where is Flyboy WeiJian? Why is he omitted? I wanted to vote for him but his name isn’t there.
Because nobody nominated him at the start. This is a reader-nominated poll. I’ve put him in.
okay, thanks!
how do you nominate a player? do you post it here?
Just let us know in the comments section. We’ll update the poll.
Isn’t Marcus Ng’s position a SF instead of PF. I’ve never seen Marcus playing PF before. Elmer Espirtu’s position should also be converted to SF or PF because in the ABL Espirtu hasn’t played SG.
The real ABL All-star team according to performance:
Starting 5:
C Kyle Jeffers (SIN)
PF Alexander Gordon Hartman (SMB)
SF Reggie Larry (BB)
SG Chris Kuete (KL)
PG Leo Avenido (BB)
Subs:
C Nakiea Miller (SMB)
PF Chaz Briggs (THA)
SF Michael LeBlanc (SIN)
SG Attaporn Lertmalaiporn (THA)
PG Rudy Lingganay (KL)
C Jason Dixon (PHI)
PG Faisal Juilius (SMB)
Alexander Hartman, is not and will never be PF, he is off or shooting guard or small forward 3 position.
Jeffers is not an outstanding player during his Oregon days.
I HAD ALREADY INFORM THE OUTCOME OF THIS TOURNAMENT.
1. PATRIOTS will win inaugural, but they had to work it out as long 3 players Gaco,Wainright and Coronel are still in the line up.
2. patriots just get legitimate scorer poaition 2 or shooting guard, they can win easily!
3. Alcaraz should play as OG post and find his range and shoot, Let Ybanez,Baguion call the play. Alcaraz is the best shooter of all 4 PG.
Where’s Mario Wuysang of SM Britama ? he’s the best ASEAN player.
Nomination list only involved 4 SM players ? this is not fair. Moreover SM in 2nd position in standings table. And they’re make 4 straight win lately. Mario have a big role on 4 straight win of SM. I think u redhoop must be considering Mario Wuysang on nomination list.
Yeah sure not a problem but no need to accuse us of being unfair. This is a reader nominated poll and readers nominated names before Wuysang joined Satria Muda. You want his name, you got it.
Wuysang is not and will never be good asean player,
Yes he play for mastodons with the records of 4 win 25 loss, that team is mediocre.
Sorry to bother you again, Les. I think Leo Avenido’s position should be changed to PG because thus far he has been the starting point guard for the Barracudas. Yup. Good job putting this up.
No problem. All changes made. Anyone have any other changes or additions, let me know.
@AgustianRusd
Too early to tell if Mario Wuysang. right now he has not done enough yet to get that distinction. Based on stats, he is far off from being the best ASEAN player.
I’ll take Avenido, Adriano and the 2 top Thai players over him.
Shall we add Captain Michael Wong into the ballot?
Sure no problem. But I don’t know his position.
Michael Wong should be a shooting guard.
@mart : it’s fine if u talk about avenido, but i don’t agree if u add 2 thai, based on their achievement they don’t deserved to it. From 4 last SM’s game, i think Mario Wuysang and Amin Prihantono must be counted on Voting. Moreover, player performance n skill not only judged from vote. Nice to meet u anyway mart.
